Recent advances in acoustic metamaterials and metasurfaces have opened new paradigms for shaping wave propagation, localization, and absorption. This presentation reviews key contributions in phononic crystals, MEMS-based acoustic devices, and high-performance ultrasound metasurfaces, highlighting mechanisms such as symmetry-protected resonances, Fabry–Pérot confinement, and coherent perfect absorption. The talk demonstrates how these concepts enable ultra-compact filters, high-Q resonators, underwater sensing platforms, and next-generation biomedical ultrasound systems. The perspective emphasizes the transition from fundamental wave engineering toward deployable acoustic technologies.

Biographie / speaker's bio:

Abdelkrim Khelif is a senior researcher (Directeur de Recherche) at CNRS (centre national de la recherché scientifique). He used to have several international appointments in Georgia Tech, in NTU-Singapore -within the CINTRA Lab and he is currently Professor at Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Qatar. He has extensive experience in design, optimization, and simulation of phononic structures. He contributes a lot in the experimental demonstration of ultrasonic phononic crystal band gap, cavities mode and waveguide at low frequency.  He is also active to extract the potential application of phononic crystal as a new acoustic device for signal processing, and sensing applications. He has multiple informal collaborations in the world.

Due to his achievements in the field of phononic crystal, Abdelkrim Khelif has been involved as the symposium session chair, technical committee member, and invited speaker in several conferences. He is also a frequent reviewer in this field for multiple physics and acoustic journals (Physical Review Letters, B, E, Applied Physics Letters, Journal of Applied Physcs, and so on). He is the recipient of Bronze medal awards from CNRS for his work in phononic crystal
